The company's approach to E3 has certainly evolved in recent years -- it at its 2017 press conference either. It's the first time since E3 started in 1995 that there won't be an official PlayStation presence at the expo, and it follows holding its annual PlayStation Experience event this year. The city of Los Angeles would also be sad to see E3 leave, as the show brings in thousands of thousands of developers, media, and now public attendees, all of whom spend money on accomodation, food, and ground travel. This was up from 50,300 at E3 2016. Sony has confirmed it plans to skip next year's E3. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event.
As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has traditionally been the biggest gaming event of the year. The city is desirable for American developers, as there is a high concentration of studios located in California and other parts of the west coast. Only one of those games, Spider-Man, has since been released, while the others , and don't yet have release dates and seem unlikely to hit shelves until after E3 next year. It is notably the --the venue it has traditionally been held in for much of its history.
The 1997 show was held in Atlanta while the 2007 show took place in Santa Monica. E3 2019 isn't the only major event Sony is skipping. E3 2017 attendance was 68,400, a figure that includes the that were sold this for the first time in the event's history that year. Microsoft notably moved nearly its entire presence offsite to the Microsoft Theater for E3 2018, with only Mixer present on the showfloor, while Nintendo has forgone live press conferences in favor of pre-recorded video presentations for the past several years. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience. No attendance figures for 2018's event have been announced yet. We aren't announcing dates beyond that. The industry's major players, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, have all had a regular presence at the show, but it appears Sony won't be a part of next year's event. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. The publisher is notably absent from the list of companies that have already committed to the event, among them its biggest console competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as other major publishers like Take-Two, Ubisoft, Activision, and more. There is no word on where E3 might go in 2020 if it leaves Los Angeles.
